This playlist is a series a conversations between Brigadier John Macfarlane and his father, Donald Macfarlane, recorded in Tobermory in the 1980’s. Their conversations are a discussion about the people of the Main Street of Tobermory from the start of the 20th century. The first four tracks are broken up into sections along the Main Street, while the fifth track identifies Tobermory’s crofters of the time.
The tapes were given to me to encode by John, some months before he passed on, and they are released to the public by kind permission of his widow, Val.
The playlist lasts 4 hours and 42 minutes and offers a uniquely detailed snapshot of life in Tobermory at the start of the last century.
To me, this is gold dust, it’s so rare to find such a rich recollection of a community at this point in time.
It’s an absolute delight to share this with you, thank you so much John and Val. Mìle taing dhuibhse!
