This episode is a conversation with Shona Reade of Tobermory.
Shona was born in Wales and moved to the Isle of Mull at the age of three with her Mum, who was originally from Mull, and her Dad – Davie Hewitt who we spoke with back in episode 83.
Shona tells us tales of her youth growing up on the Main St of Tobermory, adventures with her parents and a business of Polecat-Ferrets.
We hear tales of the food that her family would make, and how she has always hoped to work as a nurse and the long and fruitful journey Shona took to get there.
Shona also explores the nature of the brutalities of schooling in Tobermory when she was younger, which some listeners may find upsetting.
We also look at the nature of care, what it is to care for someone and what that can mean.
This takes us into Shona’s experience of a five months stay at the Lochgilphead Medical Centre as a young woman. In this section we hear of a young lady who took her own life. I’ll make a brief appearance before that section comes along if you wish to advance through it.
I can’t thank Shona enough for her bravery in speaking about this time in her life.
Alongside the serious nature of our conversation at times, there’s a lot of laughs in this episode too.
Shona also shares a couple of ghost stories with us, for which I’m very grateful.
Thanks for listening!
